Osmosis is a natural process scientifically known for about 200 years.  This process is the basis for reverse osmosis.  The walls of living cells are semi-permeably membranes, meaning that the membrane is selective and some substances pass thru it while others may not.  The semi-permeable nature of the membrane allows water to pass thru much easier than the dissolved minerals in the same water.  When pressure is applied to the concentrated solution which is greater than the osmotic pressure difference the direction of the water thru the membrane is changed and the reverse osmosis process is established.

How reverse osmosis works as a water processing system

  1. In most unit’s the first filter is a one or a five micron filter selected to remove larger particles such as silt, rust and sediment.  These filters may also be combined with carbon for chlorine reduction, a second or third pre-filter may also be used with certain units if high chlorine levels are present in the feed water.
  2. Water then travels to the operational center of the system known as the membrane.  The membrane allows hydrogen and oxygen to pass thru it’s microscopic pores while dissolved minerals are separated and flushed down the drain.  The refined water now fills the storage tank and is almost ready for use.
  3. As water is called for either by turning on your reverse osmosis faucet or by turning on your refrigerator dispenser, (reverse osmosis must be installed to refrigerator for this process) refined water passes thru another activated carbon filter (post filter) removing any remaining tastes or odors.   Thus delivering the finest and freshest water possible.

There are many practical uses for the great tasting water that a reverse osmosis system provides -  coffee, tea, juice, baby formula, ice cubes, aquariums, humidifiers, pet drinking water and countless others.

How much water does it make?  The residential reverse osmosis systems that we sell and install produce from 20 to 100 gallons of fresh water per day.  The actual output depends on several factors including membrane capacity, amount of total dissolved solids in the water, temperature and operating pressure.

Things you should know about reverse osmosis systems

  1. All reverse osmosis systems should be certified by the Water Quality Association or the National Sanitation Foundation for quality assurance.
  2. All reverse osmosis systems should have reliable shut-off valves on the feed line and the holding tank.  Note: If you have an existing system without these valves, we can add and tag them for you.
  3. Most reverse osmosis systems use water to rinse the membrane, this is a necessary operating procedure.  Some units can be adjusted to use a minimal amount.
  4. Most reverse osmosis systems come with a standard chrome faucet.  We sell and install a large variety of styles and colors to match your individual preference and budget.

A common problem solved -   One of the few complaints we address each year from owners of existing systems is that sometimes it takes too long to fill a large container of water.  We specialize in a reverse osmosis system that delivers high quality water with fast delivery fill rates.  We accomplish this with a specially designed reverse osmosis system that has larger product water lines that most of our competitors.

Maintenance - As with any appliance, regular maintenance is required for your system to operate efficiently and effectively.  If you purchase your reverse osmosis system or have Soft Water Plus, Inc. service your unit we will enroll you in our maintenance program which we will contact you when your system is due for annual maintenance.  We offer a complete 16 point, full service filter change and sanitization or an express service on the maintenance of your reverse osmosis system.

Made in the USA -  Most importantly all of our Reverse Osmosis Systems are made in the United States.  Many of these units are made right here in Arizona.  We guarantee superior technical support on our reverse osmosis systems along with our entire product line.
